WiGig: Panasonic Tablet Wirelessly Transmits A Full DVD Video In 60 Seconds (Video)

WiGig, a multi-gigabit speed wireless communications technology, was first announced back in 2009, but it’s taking companies like Panasonic quite a while to come up with applications that make use of it. Via WiGig, devices can communicate with each other at multi-gigabit speeds using the 60 GHz frequency band.

Panasonic has developed a prototype system, in which WiGig is embedded in a tablet that can wirelessly transmit data like photos or videos to displays mounted in the passenger seats of a car. That car has to be nearby: while Wi-Fi typically has a transmission range of about 30m, WiGig’s range is just 1-3m (Bluetooth: around 10m).

The tablet you can see in the video embedded below transmits a “full DVD video” in 60 seconds, according to Diginfo TV (which shot the video). WiGig, in the 1.1 specification, boasts a data transmission rate of up to 7 Gbit/s.

Panasonic is currently in the process of developing WiGig SD cards that are supposed to be commercialized in summer next year. WiGig-compatible phones are apparently on their way, too.

Here’s the video (in English):

Burton’s Mix Master Gloves Wirelessly Control Your iPhone Or iPod

By Andrew Liszewski

While they’re probably designed for x-treme sports types who want to enjoy their music while careening down a mountain on their snowboards, I actually think they’d be just as useful in the dead of winter when walking to work. I just wish these new Mix Master gloves from Burton weren’t $159.95 a pair. On the back of the left glove is a rudimentary set of playback controls which I assume lets you skip tracks, adjust the volume and pause the music coming from your iPhone or iPod Touch. So that you don’t have to take your gloves off and remove the device from your pocket when it’s cold outside.

It wirelessly connects to either device (and probably even the iPad) using a small receiver that attaches to their dock connector, and an even smaller transmitter that’s stashed somewhere inside the glove. They’ve even got an impressive 100-foot radius, and the remote can be removed from the glove and used to control your music in your car, or at home. The gloves themselves feature a waterproof ‘DRYRIDE Insane Membrane’, genuine leather exterior and a quick-drying microfiber lining. So I have no doubts they’ll work just as well when it comes to keeping your hands warm and dry.

iDVM Multimeter Wirelessly Connects To Your iOS Device

By Andrew Liszewski

If you’re keeping a tally, you can now add Voltmeter and Multimeter to the list of things that Apple’s iOS devices can do thanks to Redfish Instruments’ new iDVM digital multimeter. As you can see it’s completely lacking the traditional B&W LCD of your standard multimeter because it instead connects to an iOS device via an ad-hoc wireless network, using its large color screen to display measurements and readings. There’s also the added bonus of being able to keep a log of readings over time, and geo-tag where the measurements were taken making it handy for repairpersons who make service calls.

The accompanying iDVM app is available for free on the iTunes App Store right now if you’d like to take it for a spin, while the hardware is expected to shop on June 1 for $220.

ParkVu Announces Music WithMe App for BlackBerry Smartphones

Music WithMe Wirelessly Syncs iTunes Playlists to BlackBerry Smartphones

Louisville, KY — June 24, 2010 — ParkVu, innovators in making media truly mobile, today announced Music WithMe for BlackBerry* smartphones. Music WithMe wirelessly syncs users’ iTunes playlists with their smartphone, eliminating the need for a USB connection or secondary portable music playing device. Music WithMe provides the easiest way for smartphone owners to have their favorite music with them on the go.

Using a cellular network or Wi-Fi connection, BlackBerry smartphone owners can automatically and wirelessly download music files from thier iTunes collection to their device anytime, anywhere. Unlike streaming solutions, once music is downloaded, no wireless connection is required meaning no more data is used – saving money and battery power and providing a dependable music listening experience regardless of cellular reception. Users can sync as much music from their iTunes library as their BlackBerry smartphone can store.

“We are extremely excited to introduce Music WithMe to the BlackBerry smartphone community,” said Terry Goertz, co-CEO of ParkVu. “Music WithMe provides smartphone owners with the easiest way to get your iTunes music on your smartphone and keep it updated – without the hassle of USB cables.”

From within the app, users select which iTunes playlists they want stored on their BlackBerry smartphone. Music WithMe then works with iTunes on the PC to ensure that any changes made to the playlists are automatically reflected on their BlackBerry smartphone.

Music WithMe does not have to be open on the device to sync with iTunes. When the desired playlists are selected, the settings are stored directly on the BlackBerry smartphone. Using BlackBerry smartphone’s native media player, users can listen to their favorite songs from iTunes directly on their device.

Availability
Music WithMe is available at BlackBerry App World for a one-time fee of $14.99 after a free 30-day trial.
