(Updated: Official!) Samsung Vibrant Froyo Update Coming Via Mini Kies

FILED IN gadgets 10 Comments

Update: I’ve added in this official internal screen shot, fire up Mini Kies and get yourself Froyo!!!

To say that Samsung Vibrant owners are waking up today and checking their phones with a fury to find that elusive Froyo update would likely be an understatement. While we learned yesterday the update would in fact happen today, T-Mobile CMO Cole Brodman said the update would be staggered over time. However, early reports from the front line indicate the update will in fact take place using Mini Kies via a pc usb connection as is common with the Galaxy S line.  We can’t verify if that is actually the case, even with the above screen shot. While the shot itself does say that Mini Kies is how the update will be loaded, we don’t know if that’s the actual case just yet.

If anyone has received the update either via OTA or Mini Kies, please report back in the comments and let us know how it arrived!

T-mobile Samsung Vibrant Froyo update begins today, T-mobile commits to 3-5 month Android update turn-around

FILED IN gadgets 1 Comment

There’s nothing quite like an Android update to make your day just that much better, so you T-mobile Vibrant (aka Samsung Galaxy S) owners out there are set for a great weekend, as today — January 21 — marks the day that Froyo begins to make its way onto Vibrant handsets.

As usual, the update is only rolling out starting today, meaning that it may not immediately be available to you.

T-mobile haven’t stated whether this update will come over-the-air, or arrive via Samsung’s Kies desktop software, but considering that every other Galaxy S variant has required Kies to update, it’s likely that the Vibrant will, too.

Apparently, the update was given to T-mobile back in November, but skinning, testing, and the holiday season meant it hasn’t been ready to release until now.

Further to this, T-Mobile’s Chief Marketing Officer, Cole Brodman, told PC Mag yesterday that customers demanding regular updates is a new concept to T-mobile, and that they are “going to have to step up and change the way [they] do things.”

Cole even went so far as to say that T-mobile aims to roll out future Android updates “within 3-5 months after Google makes the OS version public”, which is a great commitment to hear from a carrier.

For those that can’t remember what updates Froyo brings, you can check our post on it here. The biggest update is the JIT compiler, which should give your Vibrant a noticeable bump in speed.

Samsung Vibrant Froyo Update Coming January 21st, Tomorrow!

FILED IN gadgets No Comments

Woah, this is going to be like winning the lottery for Samsung Vibrant owners who have been up in arms of the holdup of Android 2.2 Froyo for the Vibrant. It’s coming, tomorrow according to PCMag and T-Mobile CMO Cole Brodman. As with most updates, it will come in waves so not everyone will receive it on the first day.

Let me reiterate that point…NOT everyone will receive it on the first day, it will be a staggered rollout.

So what was the holdup? Purely technical says Brodman, not marketing, payment or sales.

“It was a quality control and timing issue,” Brodman said. “The biggest challenge is integration and customization.”

Moving forward, T-Mobile will stiff to update all Android phones to new versions of the Android OS within 3-5 months after Google makes the new OS public.

Smartphone users expecting frequent upgrades is “new to us,” Brodman said, “and we’re going to have to step up and change the way we do things.”

Along with that, Brodman also mentioned the introduction of the 4G Galaxy S to be introduced at Mobile World Congress on February 13th.
