To commemorate the 50th anniversary of Fujitsu’s PFU subsidiary, their PFU Imaging Solutions Europe Limited division has commissioned a couple of special edition versions of the company’s ScanSnap S1500 and S1300 scanners. The units will be available in a limited run since they’re decorated by hand with a high-quality Urushi lacquer coating and gold powder embellishments including an eagle and the ScanSnap logo. There’s no doubt the results look fantastic, particularly when compared to the standard gray or black plastic housing of most scanners. So $2,200 for the S1300 and $3,200 for the S1500 almost seems like a bargain when you consider you’ll have the best looking scanner in the office.

Apple lands rights to special alloy; stronger, lighter iPads on the way?

FILED IN gadgets No Comments

According to a report by Apple Insider, Jobs&Co have just secured the exclusive rights to an incredibly light and durable metal alloy. (Any comic nerds hoping for Adamantium may be disappointed, I don’t think it really exists. Plus I’m sure it’s taken from ore and not formed out of more than one pre-existing metal.) Despite the fact that it’s probably not suitable for Wolverine, it seems like it could be incredibly useful in iPads, iPhones and iPod Touch devices.

The alloy is supposedly super strong, very light, and resists rusting and wear. It is manufactured by Liquid Metal, an US based company, which supplies the metal for use in tennis racquets, golf clubs and medical tools. Overall, it seems an almost perfect material. The actual rights themselves cover: “a perpetual, worldwide, fully-paid, exclusive license to commercial such intellectual property in the field of electronic products in exchange for a license fee.” So, nobody else will be able to create any electronic gadget with this specific metal in it. Apple will have one over on all its competitors, at least until something better comes along.

I can picture the next iPad already, with its custom alloy frame, and super strong glass screen, it’ll be virtually indestructible.
