Planets Of The Solar Sytem Ring Forged From Meteorite

FILED IN Entertainment No Comments

solar-system-ring.jpg

Because meteorite jewelry is like, so steamy hot (think ice cubes on your nips after a scalding shower) right now, here’s a $4,200 gold and meteorite ring featuring all the planets of the solar system represented in different precious stones. And speaking of precious stones — look at this piece of onyx I picked up on a hike this weekend. “That’s a dog turd.” You sure? I tried scratching it and– “Got pieces of it under your fingernail?” I…thought onyx was soft like talc.

This ring features a complete band of Gibeon Meteorite framed and mounted in an 18k gold band. The meteorite has been etched with nitric acid to reveal the characteristic patterns, or Widmanstatten figures, of iron meteorites, and set with 9 gemstones representing the planets of our Solar System. Mercury is represented by a rust colored Sapphire, Venus a golden Sapphire, Earth an irradiated blue Diamond, Mars a Ruby, Jupiter an Opal, Saturn a Cats Eye Chrysoberyl with an inlaid 24k gold ring, Uranus a green Sapphire, Neptune a blue Sapphire and Pluto a black Diamond. What really makes this ring special is that the band of meteorite spins independent of the gold ring, so when it is on, the planets rotate around the wearer’s finger.

Did you read that? They included Pluto! I knew some people hadn’t given up on him. Don’t you worry bro — we’re gonna get your planet classification reinstated ASAP. “Hurry — Uranus has been making fun of me.” What the — you tell that jerk he was named after buttholes!

Thanks to lizzy, who claims she touched the One Ring once even though I know she didn’t and is a DIRTY ELVEN SWINDLER! Kidding, she’s human and I’m sure very pleasant (and probably not sending any more tips).

Maybe It’s A Distress Call: Sun Shoots Brilliant Solar Flare

FILED IN Entertainment No Comments

brilliant-solar-flare.jpg

This is a 5-second (literally, five seconds) time-lapse video of the sun exploding with a brilliant solar flare yesterday (April 16th). It wasn’t a particularly strong one, but it is one of the most impressive NASA’s managed to catch on tape. The most impressive thing I’ve managed to catch on tape? A duck eating a frog. He was all, “What you got there, GW — balled up pieces of bread? I’mma eat this frog!”

Hit the jump for the five second version, along with a minute version so you can see the before and after (the blast is right at 0:24). View full post on Geekologie – Gadgets, Gizmos, and Awesome

KYOCERA, IHI, MIZUHO Corporate Bank Reach Basic Agreement to Build & Operate 70MW Solar Power Plant in Japan

FILED IN gadgets No Comments

Kyocera, IHI and Mizuho today announced that the three companies have reached a basic agreement to construct a 70-megawatt (MW) solar power plant in southern Japan and to further explore a business model for utility-scale solar power generation. The “mega-solar plant” is being built to help solve Japan’s power supply issues caused by the effects of the Great East Japan Earthquake, and to make a contribution to environmental protection, including the reduction of CO2 emissions.

Don’t Forget To Write: Voyager One Becomes First Man-Made Object To Leave The Solar System

FILED IN Entertainment No Comments

voyager-1.jpg

Voyager 1, best known for being named after the iffiest series in the Star Trek franchise (I assume), has left our solar system after traveling nearly 11-billion miles, becoming the first man-made object to do so. *standing around* Well?! One of you better be baking a f***ing cake.

For the very first time, Voyager’s instruments have also begun to detect gusts of charged particles blowing in the opposite direction, back towards our sun. Where are these particles coming from? Whatever’s out there in the space between the stars. Interstellar space, they call it, and it’s what makes up most of our galaxy…

Voyager 1 should have enough fuel and propellant to continue traveling outwards (and sending back data) until at least 2020, by which time it’ll be about 12.5 billion miles from us.

Are you thinking what I’m thinking? “About those idiots that drank the Kool-Aid hoping to zoom off in the spaceship behind Hale-Bopp?” Haha, yeah. It would’ve been cooler if they’d shot themselves out of a cannon.

Voyager 1 becomes first man-made object to taste galactic space [dvice]

Thanks to Jester, who also doubles as the king’s food taster. OMG, you’ve got to try these mashed potatoes — they’re to die for. MWAHA MWAHAHAHAHAHA!! View full post on Geekologie – Gadgets, Gizmos, and Awesome

Do Not Water: Solar Bonsai Gadget Charger

FILED IN Entertainment No Comments

tree-charger-1.jpg

This is the Solar Bonsai Electree, a 27-solar paneled gadget charger in the shape of a tree. Too crazy for you? You better stop reading. The tree reaches a full charge in less than three hours and can store enough juice to charge 9 iPhones. Why anybody would have more than six iPhones is beyond me, but I have five and play Voltron with them sometimes. The tree is currently on presale for €299 (~$405), but at least 400 people have to order before they’re actually manufactured. Want to go green but not pony up the $400? Run an extension cord into your apartment from the plug in the hallway. “How is that green?” Haha, it doesn’t show up on my bill! Between siphoning volts from my neighbors and the hallway I’m only paying $8 a month in electricity — and that’s to run the the exhaust fan in the bathroom! Which is mandatory if you know what I mean. I mean I make gin in the bathtub and it gets fumey in there.
