T-Mobile To Pull The Plug On Sidekicks May 31st

FILED IN gadgets No Comments

The Sidekick is dead. Long live the Sidekick.

The phone that pulled oh-so-many a geek into the mobile world by showing them that phones could do so much more (while still looking cool!) has died. T-Mobile released a statement tonight announcing that all Sidekick data services will be terminated as of May 31st, promising anyone still on a ‘Kick “an easy transition… to a new device.” What that entails, exactly, is anyone’s bet for the moment.

This wasn’t exactly unforeseeable. In a world everyone seems to either want a swiss army phone that does everything and anything or an ultra basic handset that serves as little more than a portable rotary phone, there’s not much room for the Sidekick anymore. Doesn’t mean it’s not a bummer.

[Updated] T-Mobile Ending Sidekicks Sales July 2nd, Says To Expect Something Better Soon

FILED IN gadgets 10 Comments

Update: While we’ve been guessing this for a while now, mocoNews is also reporting a rumor that T-Mobile will resurrect the Sidekick as an Android device. As the Sidekick line remains an iconic part of the T-Mobile brand it seems fitting to introduce an Android based Sidekick incorporating the best of both worlds, mainly the Android OS and the Sidekick form factor. Stay tuned!

Today, T-Mobile announced that it will be discontinuing its Sidekick handset line. Magenta states that as it looks to “further innovate and raise the bar for the next iteration of the T-Mobile Sidekick”, beginning tomorrow July 2nd, the Sidekick LX and Sidekick 2008 will no longer be available through T-Mobile retail stores, Customer Care, telesales, or online. Additionally, Magenta promises that it will be putting a twist on things by replacing the lineup with a “new and fresh experience” sometime in the coming months. This shouldn’t come as no surprise, as we’ve been expecting a replacement for awhile now.
