Get ready for two intensive days of iPad rumors and speculation. They’re not going away until the announcement is made on Wednesday. The latest is that Apple’s deal with DHL and other couriers to ship the iPad 3 units from China has had a knock-on effect on the freight industry. With Cupertino taking up so much of the available space on flights at a…

$8K Compressed Air Cars Shipping In August (In India)

FILED IN Entertainment No Comments

compressed-air-cars.jpg

Want a cheap car that runs on compressed air? Well you’re in luck, India’s Tata Motors (makers of the world’s least expensive car) has announced the MINI Cat will be shipping in August for around $8,200. Unfortunately, you may have to move to India to drive one, because I doubt it’ll pass any rigorous vehicle safety standards. *watches neighbor crawl through his passenger-side window because neither door opens* Holy shit.

Mini CAT’s top speed is around 60 miles per hour while its range is about 185 miles.

The Mini CAT’s body is glued fiberglass, as opposed to welded metal, which makes it extremely lightweight…The Mini CAT uses just one liter of vegetable oil in its tubular chassis, which must be changed every 30,000 miles or so.

Charging and running the Mini CAT costs about one tenth what a gasoline car costs. The car’s compressed air tank can be filled at home in three or four hours with its onboard compressor. India will have adapted air compressors at gas stations, which for about 100 rupees or $2.49 can fill your compressed air tank in two – three minutes

Is this even for real? It seems like we should have been on this like, a loooooong time ago. Unless — UNLESS — the compressed air tank explodes if someone touches your bumper. Now I just did a whole bunch of research on compressed air cars and their questionable efficiency/sustainability so I could write this article as intelligently as possible, so I’ll leave you with this tidbit: I read they can coast on farts if you run out of air between service stations. “Where’d you read that?” On a blog. “Geekologie? So you’re quoting yourself now?!” It’s not illegal — people do it all the time!

India’s Tata Motors Mini CAT Runs On Air [examiner]

Thanks to taylor and Bradley, who want cars that can run on happy thoughts. Me? I want one that can run on murderous ones. MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! View full post on Geekologie – Gadgets, Gizmos, and Awesome

For Rapid Wireless Data Exchange: Toshiba Starts Shipping TransferJet LSI

FILED IN gadgets No Comments

TransferJet is having a hard time going mainstream, but Toshiba hasn’t given up on the close proximity wireless transfer technology yet: after taking the wraps off a small TransferJet LSI back in September last year, the company now announced it’s ready to begin shipping the first samples to electronics manufacturers.

Visitors of the CES 2012 (which kicks off on January 10 in Las Vegas) will be able to see the LSI in action at the Toshiba booth.

Sized at just 4.0×4.0× 0.5mm, the chip is designed to enable stable, quick wireless data transfer between mobile devices in particular, i.e. smartphones, tablets, or digital cameras. (TransferJet boasts a theoretically transfer speed of 560 Mbps.)

Toshiba has priced the samples at US$5 per unit and plans to produce one million chips monthly starting in Q2 of 2012.

I just wanted to let you guys know that Apple is now offering free next-day shipping through its online store. This is great if, like me, you’re scrambling to get gifts for everyone on your list. It’s important to note that iPad and iPod engraving is no longer available, which makes sense since it would take too long to engrave and ship before…

Nokia Starts Shipping Lumia 710 To Asia, Russia; Priced 270 Euros Without Taxes

FILED IN gadgets No Comments

lumia

Nokia this morning announced that it has started shipping its stylish, Windows Phone 7.5 Mango-powered smartphone Lumia 710 to customers in Taiwan (where it is sold alongside the Lumia 800).

Over the next week, the phone will hit shelves across Singapore, Hong Kong, India and Russia – no other global roll-out details were announced for the time being.

The estimated retail price is 270 euros, excluding taxes and subsidies.

From our original coverage when the Lumia phones were announced:

The 710 (formerly known as the Sabre) is the chunkier of the two, but that doesn’t mean it’s a slouch when it comes to hardware. It repackages the same 1.4GHz processor as seen in the Lumia 800, and pairs it with a 3.7-inch WVGA screen, and a 5-megapixel rear camera. It’s meant to be Nokia and Microsoft’s effort to capture a more budget-conscious audience, and it’s heartening to see Nokia give it the same performance potential as their more premium offering.

Though the 710 only sports 8GB of internal storage, it beats out its brother by including a microSD card slot that can accept up to 16GB of additional flash storage. It also bears the distinction of being one of the few Windows Phone with physical navigation keys, which is sure to please fans of tactile feedback.

Expect to see it hit shelves in both stealth black and crisp white, with multiple colored backplates to please the chromatically indecisive.

On a sidenote: I’ve been using Nokia’s Lumia 800 for a week now, and it’s pretty bad-ass.

More on that later, hopefully this weekend.
