Dell To Announce Something On February 8th, Presumably Involves Phones

FILED IN gadgets No Comments

Between Palm’s announcement on February 9th, and Sprint’s announcement on February 7th, next month is already looking pretty dang busy. Thank God we’ve got February 8th to relax and catch our breath!

Oh, what’s that? Dell is announcing something on February 8th? Well, crap.

We don’t know much about what Dell will be announcing (outside of the fact that it’s seemingly Business/Enterprisey) — but judging by the fact that they went out of their way to invite me (TechCrunch’s resident phone geek), we can probably assume it’ll have to do with smartphones in one way or another. We’ll be there live, so be sure to tune in on February 8th at 10 A.M Pacific, won’t you?

Microsoft Begins MGS Mobile Gaming Studio Presumably For Windows 7 Phone Games

FILED IN gadgets No Comments

What does Pitfall! have to do with Microsoft? Nothing, I just thought it looked neat.

And now it looks like Microsoft is getting into the mobile video game “space.” Redmond has posted on its careers Web site that it is looking for people to staff its new MGS Mobile Gaming studio. (MGS stands for Microsoft Games.) You have a better chance of attracting their attention if you have C# and Xbox Live programming experience.

The “mission statement” for the new studio reads (well, read):

MGS Mobile Gaming – focused on bringing games and entertainment to the mobile life that people lead. Our vision is to deliver games and entertainment so good that people will want them always with them, on a service that makes them social, connected and relevant anywhere their life goes. The Mobile Gaming team is building industry leading products that showcase our Windows Phone platform as well as emerging mobile platforms, and will help realize Microsoft’s connected entertainment vision. The Mobile Gaming studio will be the hub for MGS franchises and titles on mobile devices and a center of excellence for mobile games.

It should be noted that the position has already been filled.

The studio will likely develop games for Microsoft’s upcoming Windows 7 phones.

Looks like Nintendo has yet another company to worry about!

RIM Buys “BlackPad.com”, Presumably As A Home For The BlackBerry Tablet

FILED IN gadgets 2 Comments

Unless someone at Research In Motion is taking the time to screw with all of us, it looks like we might have an official name for their long-rumored BlackBerry tablet project: BlackPad.

Word of the name comes not from a disgruntled employee, nor from a prototype left at a bar; this one’s straight out of a good ol’ fashion WHOIS lookup on a domain. According to registration records, RIM purchased BlackPad.com just days ago.

How RIM obtained the domain still isn’t completely clear. The domain swapped hands at least once before, and has been squatted by one person or another since January of 2002. I’m not able to find any trademarks for the “BlackPad” name, so it seems unlikely that RIM could have squeezed it out of the previous owner’s hands without a bit of cash.

As is to be expected for an unannounced and mostly unofficial project, the domain currently doesn’t resolve to anything.

Interestingly, the name “BlackPad” has been surrounding the rumored tablet for almost as long as the rumors have existed. Some have chalked it up as a code name, while others insist it’s the name it’ll ship with — either way, RIM seems to have interest in protecting it.

With that said, lets go ahead and get the unavoidable argument started now: BlackPad — Good name? Bad name? Duke it out in the comments below.

[Thanks for the tip, Mr. Canada!]
