The Moan: Of trademarks and lawsuits

It’s back. Perhaps not in its regular weekly sense, but we’re reviving what was once known as the Weekly Moan here on TiP. Being British, I’m renewing my love for complaining, this week my attention is on Apple’s incessant need to file lawsuits and claims against patent infringement. Earlier this week my anger towards Apple was taken to a new level….

The Weekly Moan: iOS 4.2 WiFi problems

FILED IN gadgets No Comments

Unfortunately I can’t claim to have owned one of Apple’s first iPhone handsets. In fact, I didn’t get one until the 3GS was released. iOS 3 was my first experience of iPhone software. This however did not make me unaware of the iPhone’s shortcomings. I was well used to slating its lack of features compared to pretty much every other phone on the market. (I worked for T-mobile UK, and at the time O2 had the exclusivity on it.) I’m glad to say, pretty much all those missing features are now there to use, finally. MMS being the key one. However, one thing the iPhone has always had is WiFi. When it came to setting up a wireless connection, the iPhone was number one. So many devices at the time didn’t WiFi, and many still don’t. The iPhone is king of WiFi.

So, why oh why is iOS 4.2 showing some pretty major kinks when it comes to connecting to a wireless network? Either it won’t connect, or discover the router, or when it does it won’t actually get on to the internet. How is that even possible? How could the developers get something so important, and intrinsic to iOS, so utterly wrong? Having WiFi but no connection is like having a plateful of syrup, but no pancakes. After the year Apple has had, everyone should be making every effort to make sure nothing so vital goes wrong again. Need I bring up Antennagate again?

What was going on in the iOS 4.2 development team’s meetings? Did no one get assigned the task of making sure the device could effectively use its WiFi capabilities? Think of the features that will not work without a connection to wireless. FaceTime, Internet, Mail, AirPlay and AirPrint, Skype and any other VOIP apps, pretty much everything needs some sort of internet connection. Even games with Game Center or Open Feint enabled need access to the world wide web. Seriously, why didn’t this get tested before they let it loose on app developers. With this feature not working you may as well be holding a ten inch book in your hand. Without wireless, the iPad is as useful as a bobsled in Jamaica. (Get the film reference there?)

That’s enough from me though. Let me know your thoughts on the matter below.

The Weekly Moan: The white iPhone 4 nonsense

FILED IN gadgets 1 Comment

The “will there – won’t there” saga is still on. Why? I think your guess is as good as mine. “Available soon” became “later this year”, and now it’s looking likely it won’t be until early next year, and that’s if it ever makes it on to our local store shelves.

I’ve heard a couple of differing stories as to why the device still hasn’t been produced, ready for market. But, both reasons are down to the color of the handset. The first reason: because it affects the camera. Second: because the home key ends up a different shade of white to the fascia. Both reasons to me seem like issues that should have been solved way before Jobs even announced the iPhone 4 back in June. What really gets my blood boiling, (in an introverted, British, passive-aggressive way), is that surely this is the kind of thing you sort out during product design? Did a prototype not get made?

Not getting the correct color seems a schoolboy error to me. I mean, they can get the black to match just fine. What’s so different about the white paint? So, the glue may discolor it slightly. How about this for a solution: USE A DIFFERENT GLUE. No one will notice that the adhesive is different to the black version, unless it gives of some sort of awful odor, or gets you high.

If I was one of Apple’s chiefs, I’d either call it a day now, or go get a more suitable job; at a fast-food restaurant. Hooters anyone? I’m kind of serious about this though. There’s literally no point in Apple releasing one any later than Christmas. Why? Because, the amount of time hopeful iPhone 4 customers have been waiting will then be equal to the amount of time until the iPhone 5 is released, and they may as well hold out another few months and get a better device. I’d hate it if the White model was released in Feb/March, and the next generation of Apple handsets was announced only 3 months later. Seriously bad mess Apple.

So, what should you do about it? Certainly don’t bother waiting now for the white version. Keep your existing iPhone and wait until the the iPh5 is released. You may as well. Despite the iPhone 4 being the best handheld device Cupertino has released,  it’s probably been the most disappointing. “Antennagate”, followed by “Glassgate”, and the entire time the alternative color is still not right. Steve Jobs should probably just draw a line under this one, and plan better for the next major phone release.

I’d love to know how may of you are still going to wait for the white iPhone 4. Have you changed your mind recently and bought an Evo or Epic 4G? Let me know in the comments section, and as always I’m happy for you to tweet me @TiP_Cam

How many times can we read about a Verizon iPhone? I’m getting slightly incensed by it. Aren’t all the rumors just a bit too much? When, oh when, will they finally make this official??
