HTC Sues Apple Over Patents, Wants Injunction And Lots Of Damages

For lack of a better term, Apple has been more than a little litigation-happy lately. While they’ve focused most of their recent efforts on Samsung and Motorola, Apple is now coming under fire from a company they’ve already sued: HTC.

HTC has filed a suit (warning: PDF) in the U.S. District Court in Delaware claiming that Apple has infringed on three of their patents by producing what they refer to in legalese as “Accused Apple Products.” The list of said products is extensive, to say the least: it lists among other things “personal computers, mobile communications devices, wireless printers, streaming wireless capable television, wireless network equipment [and] portable digital music and video players.” In short, nearly everything that Apple makes allegedly infringes on the patents that HTC owns.

Of the three patents HTC claims were infringed upon, only one (#7,765,414) was filed by HTC themselves. The other two of patents in question (#7,672,219 and #7,417,944) were picked up when HTC paid $75 million to purchase ADC Telecommunications’ patent portfolio last April. They deal with “multipoint-to-point communication using orthogonal frequency division multiplexing” and “method for orderwire moduation” respectively, two topics that are apparently far-reaching enough to encompass Apple’s entire product lineup.

HTC’s suit also aims for the bleachers when it comes to the nitty-gritty of their compensation. On top of compensatory damages for Apple’s patent infringement, HTC also seeks enhanced damages of up to triple the amount of compensatory damages. What’s more, the suit calls for a possible injunction against making, selling, or importing any of Apple’s accused products within the U.S.

It’s a huge move by HTC, with whom Apple has shared some rough history. Given what’s been going on in the tech world in recent weeks, it feels as though this suit could be the result of many factors. HTC could simply be firing back at Apple for another patent infringement lawsuit they were on the receiving end of. It could also be on some level a show of force after the Google/Motorola deal, a way to bolster their public image as fighters in the face of future competition with Motorola. In any case, HTC has asked for a jury trial, so there will be much, much more drama to come.

Maps+ App Is Maps Plus Lots Of Other Stuff

FILED IN gadgets No Comments

At TechCrunch Disrupt NYC last week, Google’s location boss Marissa Mayer pointed out that Google Maps for mobile traffic will surpass that of its desktop counterpart by June. Our dependence on mobile technology for where we are and where we’re going seems to be growing by the minute, so its not too surprising to see a number of enhanced Map apps hit various app stores. One in particular, Maps+, caught our eye. And Maps+ is exactly what its name describes: Google Maps… plus a lot of other cool features.

A three-finger swipe up and down will bring up the different map types, and a tap on your current location will offer up extra information about your location fix, including coordinates, horizontal accuracy, altitude, and vertical accuracy. When a route is requested, Maps+ offers all the different possible routes to take, with options for driving, walking, or cycling. And just like the default Maps app, Maps+ offers track recording.

Another fun feature is the ability to add bookmarks to locations with label customization (unfortunately only three labels at a time), which can then be exported to GPX with mail or iTunes, or imported using Safari, Mail, or any other app that supports quick look. Maps+ also taps the power of one of our favorite social networks, Twitter, to show you where friends are tweeting from, which is my second favorite feature besides location alarms. Location alarms give you the option to be notified when entering or exiting the area of a certain bookmarked location.

The app interface is clean and easy to use, and offers the option to add any of your frequently used buttons straight to the map itself. Unfortunately, certain features are limited: one route bookmark, three pin bookmarks, two route transit points, one track bookmark, 2km of track recording, and one alarm bookmark. Twitter log-in and GPX import capabilities are also disabled upon the initial installation, but that can all be remedied with a simple in-app purchase to the tune of $2.99.

If you’re a hardcore Maps user like myself, Maps+ is definitely worth a try. The IZE app is available today in the Apple App Store for free for the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad.

I’m Sure There’s Lots Of Demand For A $1,300 Morse Code Signal Lamp These Days Right?

Morse Code Signal Lamp (Image courtesy Hammacher Schlemmer)
By Andrew Liszewski

I’m not saying it will never be useful, I’m just saying I’m finding it hard to see how anyone could justify dropping $1,300 on a decorative morse code lamp, even if it is fully functional. It’s got seven louvers covering the 13 1/2-inch lamp which are controlled by a metal handle, and the aluminum and brass finishes give it an authentic look that I’m sure any family member who served in the Navy in the late 1800’s will appreciate. Though in lieu of the carbon arc lamps of yesteryear it uses a single 100-watt bulb of your choosing for your illumination. So purists beware! Available from where other than Hammacher Schlemmer.
