Sorcery!: Levitating Quantum Superconductors

Magnets: Now I’M not even sure how they work.

Just hit the jump and watch the video, you won’t regret it. My brain actually exploded out of my skull halfway through and was all, “finally, I’m free!” which quickly turned to “oh SHIT, look at this dump!” and regretted leaving. You know what I told him? Nothing, I just drooled all over myself until he climbed his ass back in there because it’s harder thinking with cobwebs than a talking skeleton might lead you to believe. This is a video of Tel-Aviv University demoing some “quantum superconductors locked in a magnetic field”. Seriously, just watch it — this is like the future. Of magic tricks.

Levitating Girl Natsumi Hayashi

Note: Very worthwhile 16-picture gallery after the jump.

This is gallery of photographs by and all featuring Natsumi Hayashi, a Tokyo teenager who takes hundreds of pictures of herself jumping until she captures just the right one where, instead of jumping, it looks like she’s levitating. That, or she just takes one and Photoshops the hoverboard out.

“The only way to get a right timing for a shot is jumping a lot,” Hayashi said in an interview with the U.K.’s Daily Mail, dispelling our hopeful illusions that she’s the first human being who can actually fly. “Sometimes I need to jump over 100 times to get a right shot” She does this in front of her camera, mounted on a tripod, and continues to do so until she achieves that perfect, natural-looking “levitation.”

“I got the idea from an English idiom that says ‘to have one’s feet firmly planted on the ground,” she continued. “In Japan, we have the exact same idiom. But I am not a practical person at all. Therefore, I try ‘not to have my feet firmly on the ground’ in my self-portrait photos to show my true self.”

Oh reaaaaaaaaally, Natsumi? Is your ‘real self’ actually an impractical girl or — OR — is it a levitating witch? Ha — no need to answer, we’re gonna drown you either way just to be safe.

Cool Photos of Levitating Girl

FILED IN technology No Comments

Incredible self-portraits by Japanese photographer Natsumi Hayashi show her flying around Tokyo.

Levitation illusion was achieved by jumping in the air and taking photos using fast shutter speed (faster than 1/500 s) to freeze the action.

LOS!Series Levitating Lamps

LOS! Levitating Lamps (Images courtesy LOS!Concepts)
By Andrew Liszewski

We may still be sorely lacking in flying cars and hoverboards here in the 21st century, but I’m pretty sure our 20th century ancestors would be impressed that we’ve managed to harness the power of levitation when it comes to designer lighting! These LOS!Series lamps, creatively named the LOS #1 and LOS #2, use magnetic technology developed by Crealev (Creative Levitation Design) for a unique hovering effect.

Each of the designs use energy-efficient LED lighting and the floaty bits hover about 3-4cm above the base. Personally I prefer the LOS #1 (pictured on the left) since the LOS #2 is a bit too sci-fi for my tastes, but unfortunately it’s currently sold out. However, LOS #2 is still available for ~$1,630 (€1,199) if you want it in white, or ~$1,700 (€1,249) if you prefer black.
