iTunes hacked to boost sales – (How to protect yourself)
Jul 5th
What originally started as one lone app developer hacking in to users accounts to purchase his books/apps on the App Store, has now unveiled a much more widespread problem. First of all, it was brought to light that a certain software creator, Thuat Nguyen, was using other people’s accounts to get his software up the rankings in the iTunes virtual store. It was mostly books, and stories of people having a $200 bill on their credit/debit cards. What this meant in turn, was that the developer’s apps would climb higher and higher up the rankings giving it more exposure to the market, and making it more likely to receive more downloads. This particular character was removed from the store, as were all his apps.
After looking in to it a little deeper, The Next Web discovered that it was actually a huge issue, and not just with this single developer. For the past 4 weeks customers have been complaining of activity up to $600, all on apps, in Apple’s hugely popular online download store. Many people were leaving comments in iTunes itself complaining of their accounts being hacked, and that it was near impossible to speak with a Cupertino representative. With customers left disgruntled and frustrated, Jobs&Co don’t seem to have been doing enough to help the issue so far. Emails in many cases are unanswered, and when they are, it seems the company isn’t too keen on dishing out refunds. Instead the responses have mostly been for users to change their passwords. The pattern appears to be that a couple of cheap apps are bought, and then a more expensive (around $50) is purchased. .
So, here’s a few things you can do to protect yourself.
- Change your password. It’s what Apple will tell you to do, and it does make sense. Changing your password often is the best way to stay safe, especially with your credit card details saved on the system.
- Use gift cards. Another, slightly more patience testing way, is to remove your credit card details from iTunes and stick to just using Apple’s git cards.
- Double check your iTunes purchases over the past month, just to make sure there’s nothing on there you haven’t spotted. If you notice some unfamiliar apps, contact Apple. (Hit this link or call 800-275-2273 and keep pressing 0 until you get to a real person).

Rumor: Cloud-based iTunes on the way!
Jul 3rd
Add this to the cloud-based iTunes rumor pile: According to a tipster at BoyGenius Report, upcoming iTunes plans will finally include the oft-reported, much-desired new feature. There are three ways this will be implemented, says the source.
iTunes will be able to:
- Stream music and videos from Apple servers to your computers and devices.
- Stream music and videos from your computers to your other computers and devices.
- Wirelessly sync with devices.
There’s a lot of “good” here, along with some concerns. If true, these features could free up a lot of onboard storage on mobiles. If you walk around with a ton of media on hand, that liberated space might even offer a performance boost for your device. And if you’re like me, unable to fit all your media in your phone or iPad, you’ll be able to access your whole catalog of stuff anywhere you are.
But there are also bandwidth considerations. With all these nifty new programs we could all be enjoying, like Netflix for the iPhone, Hulu Plus and now possibly cloud-based iTunes, some users will likely be pushed past the data limits of their tiered data plans.
But there’s an even more obvious concern: Some of us are having serious signal issues. Putting iTunes in the cloud and accessing it via a handset with on-again, off-again reception could be asking for even more frustration.
One aspect of this that seems to have very little bad to it, at least as far as I can tell, is wireless iTunes syncing. The idea of not having to hook up my iDevice often sounds pretty dreamy to me.
What about you? What feature of cloud-based iTunes would you look forward to most? Weigh in below.

Apple iTunes 9.2 Release Date Expected on June 21st?
Jun 9th
Apple have let it slip some of the new features that we can expect to see when they update their iTunes service. The new 9.2 edition is expected to be ready in time for the new Apple OS, the iOS 4 and will see a host of minor improvements.
Currently available as a beta, the new iTunes won’t be radical departure from what we have seen before, however it will allow users to sync and read books with iPhone or iPod touch using iPhone OS4 and iBook.
The new update will see users able to organise their home screen into folders using iTunes.
You will be able to organise and sync PDF documents as books and for the first time you’ll be able to read PDF’s within the new iBook app.
Some improvements on the backend of iTunes will see faster back-ups while syncing and increased performance on scrolling.
Many of the new features relate to the soon to be released iPhone 4G. We’re still waiting for major revamp of the general look of iTunes and this update isn’t it, but we suspect it will happen soon as it starting to look a bit dated.
With the release of iOS4 confirmed for June 21 which we suspect that iTune 9.2 will be made ready either the same time, or a few days before.

Google Music To Take On iTunes
Jun 9th
Google have let it slip that they are about to take on the Apple’s iTunes store with the launch of their very own music store for their Android mobile operating system. Named Goolge Music, it will see users being able to download media directly from their phones, similar to the Wi-Fi iTunes launched in 2007.
News was uncovered by TechCrunch, who have found a new logo on the company’s website, which suggested that users will be able to purchase music and buy apps directly from their phones as well as through a desktop application.
Google gave those in the know a brief preview at its I/O event, after announcing that they have acquired Simply Media, which will be used for the desktop app, allowing users to stream local music to their Android devices.
So this will mean Google Music will most likely be a two-tiered operation. On one end you will be able to search for songs, purchase them, and send them from the cloud directly to your android device. The other sees a desktop client that syncs your music to the cloud for streaming on your phone wherever you go.
So Google are looking to take on iTunes, but is it too late? With iTunes so well established, would this new music marketplace tempt you away from Apple and their ever expanding empire? Have your say below…
