PlayOn Officially Rolls Onto Android, Brings Netflix And Hulu With It

FILED IN gadgets No Comments

Given what Netflix has said so far, we know that Netflix for Android is coming… eventually. Even then, Netflix is still being a bit mysterious about which devices it’ll work on (though given their recent Qualcomm partnership, “things running a Snapdragon CPU” is a good guess.)

In the meantime, there’s a work around of sorts: PlayOn. After months of beta testing, PlayOn for Android is now available.

The catch: while the app is free, the service is not ($39.99 for the first year/$19.99 each year thereafter, or $79.99 for life). With that said, it’s the only means I know of right now for beamin’ the Netflix (or Hulu, TBS, CBS, Amazon VOD, MTV, SyFy, and.. uhh.. the Oprah Winfrey Network, if you’re feelin’ crazy) daterbits from any networked PC to any Android 2.2+ device over 3G or WiFi. Plus, it’ll do the same for your PS3, 360, Wii, or iOS devices.

You can find the now Beta-tag-less app in the Android Market right here.

Hulu Plus coming to Android

FILED IN gadgets No Comments

Hulu CEO Jason Kilar made an appearance at the Samsung press event at CES today, where he announced that a Hulu Plus app will be coming to Android 2.2+ in the coming months.

He demoed the app on a Samsung Galaxy S running Android 2.2.

Unfortunately, there was no mention of the price of the app, nor if it will net you an extra subscription fee.

I guess time will tell.

Hulu Plus drops subscription fee to $7.99

FILED IN gadgets No Comments

I’ve been using Hulu Plus for a couple of months now, and I have to say — it is hands-down one of my most-used apps on my iPhone and iPad. Not to say it’s perfect — I’d love to be able to watch Hell’s Kitchen on my iPad, like I do at Hulu.com on my desktop browser — but having a full season run of Glee and the entire episode warehouse of 30 Rock is nothing to sneeze at. The vid quality over Wifi is fast and spectacular, and the video resume feature (for picking up where you left off on another device) is really sweet. But that $9.99 per month fee? Well, that’s been a sticking point for a lot of would-be Hulu Plus users.

Now Hulu’s taken its Plus service off the “Preview” stage and dropped the price down by $2, for a $7.99 monthly service fee. And users who’d signed up for Hulu Plus during its $9.99 Preview phase will get credited for the difference, which I think is gosh-darn nice of them. But is it enough to get or keep a strong subscriber base?

Only time will tell, but they sure seem to be giving it all they’ve got. The company is spreading Hulu Plus everywhere they can, including its new launch on Roku and downloadable app for PlayStation 3. And on tap are Internet-connected home entertainment units like Vizio, LG Electronics, and Panasonic Blu-ray players and HDTVs; TiVo Premiere DVRs; the Xbox 360; and Western Digital’s WD TV Live Hub Media Center and WD TV Live Plus Network Media Player. And it will be debuting on more mobile phones, tablets, set-top boxes, and Internet-connected devices.

What do you think? Is $7.99 hitting the sweet spot between profitability and user acceptance? Or do you think they need to bring the price down even more?

UPDATE: Along with the new pricing structure, Hulu Plus also updated its iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad apps. There’s a new split-screen player mode on the the tablet, and new queue and subscription management features, along with enhancements to playback performance and thumbnail behavior (iPad version). If you’ve checked it out, let us know what you think of the changes.
