CallMe jailbroken app puts contacts on home screen

FILED IN gadgets No Comments

Introducing CallMe, a recently released jailbreak app that allows users to put contacts on their home screens. This application, which is available via the iSpazio repository, enables users to create contacts’ icons just like apps. Just a tap places a call or sends an SMS to that friend, depending on what you set it to do. The contact icons can also act the same way as apps, and can be filed into folders.

ShakyPlanet giveaway: Ltd edition AROD 600th home run ShakyGlobe

FILED IN gadgets No Comments

ShakyPlanet, the iPhone application that lets users collect nifty little eCollectibles called ShakyGlobes, has added a new one to the mix. It has put together a very limited ShakyGlobe in celebration of Alex Rodriguez’s 600th home run. The “600th Home Run” eCollectible is available today from the ShakyPlanet app for free, but only to the first 600 people to download it.

“AROD finally did it… home run #600! Now – whether you’re a fan or not – you can commemorate this historic event with an exclusive, limited edition FREE “600th Home Run” ShakyGlobe. To grab this one-of-a-kind eCollectible, exclusively for your iPhone or iPod Touch, simply download the ShakyPlanet App (where all your ShakyGlobes live) from the iTunes App Store and get the “600th Home Run” ShakyGlobe in the ShakyStore. These ShakyGlobes are limited to 600 (of course).”

ShakyGlobes are basically the digital version of snowglobes that many people enjoy collecting or decorating their homes with. Just like the originals, the graphics inside many of the ShakyGlobes offer the floating “snow,” confetti and other objects when you shake your device. Unlike those versions, ShakyGlobes actually offer some neat designs — like Lady Robotika, Comic Con San Diego and AROD’s limited edition — and offers a little audio, like water sounds sloshing around.

Users can collect/buy different styles within the app or share them with friends. Some globes are only available when you travel to a certain place (the device’s GPS or cell triangulation will know where you are!), and others can be purchased during limited times.

This one, the “600th Home Run” ShakyGlobe, also features audio of a stadium crowd cheering, which is actually kind of fun and nice to have when you need a pick-me-up. Really though, if you don’t like snowglobes, this probably isn’t your thing. But if you do (and you’re a baseball fan), you’ll want to get in on this offer right away. Not only will the promotion eventually end, but like other ShakyGlobes, it will eventually get pulled from the digital shelves.

RIM Buys “BlackPad.com”, Presumably As A Home For The BlackBerry Tablet

FILED IN gadgets 2 Comments

Unless someone at Research In Motion is taking the time to screw with all of us, it looks like we might have an official name for their long-rumored BlackBerry tablet project: BlackPad.

Word of the name comes not from a disgruntled employee, nor from a prototype left at a bar; this one’s straight out of a good ol’ fashion WHOIS lookup on a domain. According to registration records, RIM purchased BlackPad.com just days ago.

How RIM obtained the domain still isn’t completely clear. The domain swapped hands at least once before, and has been squatted by one person or another since January of 2002. I’m not able to find any trademarks for the “BlackPad” name, so it seems unlikely that RIM could have squeezed it out of the previous owner’s hands without a bit of cash.

As is to be expected for an unannounced and mostly unofficial project, the domain currently doesn’t resolve to anything.

Interestingly, the name “BlackPad” has been surrounding the rumored tablet for almost as long as the rumors have existed. Some have chalked it up as a code name, while others insist it’s the name it’ll ship with — either way, RIM seems to have interest in protecting it.

With that said, lets go ahead and get the unavoidable argument started now: BlackPad — Good name? Bad name? Duke it out in the comments below.

[Thanks for the tip, Mr. Canada!]
