RIM Buys “BlackPad.com”, Presumably As A Home For The BlackBerry Tablet

Unless someone at Research In Motion is taking the time to screw with all of us, it looks like we might have an official name for their long-rumored BlackBerry tablet project: BlackPad.

Word of the name comes not from a disgruntled employee, nor from a prototype left at a bar; this one’s straight out of a good ol’ fashion WHOIS lookup on a domain. According to registration records, RIM purchased BlackPad.com just days ago.

How RIM obtained the domain still isn’t completely clear. The domain swapped hands at least once before, and has been squatted by one person or another since January of 2002. I’m not able to find any trademarks for the “BlackPad” name, so it seems unlikely that RIM could have squeezed it out of the previous owner’s hands without a bit of cash.

As is to be expected for an unannounced and mostly unofficial project, the domain currently doesn’t resolve to anything.

Interestingly, the name “BlackPad” has been surrounding the rumored tablet for almost as long as the rumors have existed. Some have chalked it up as a code name, while others insist it’s the name it’ll ship with — either way, RIM seems to have interest in protecting it.

With that said, lets go ahead and get the unavoidable argument started now: BlackPad — Good name? Bad name? Duke it out in the comments below.

[Thanks for the tip, Mr. Canada!]

I’m surprised it’s taken this long for someone to realize that Disney’s Imagineers have created some cool stuff the public might actually want to get their hands on. But instead of an animatronic version of Abraham Lincoln, it’s the artificial candles seen in the Haunted Mansion ride that you’ll soon be able to buy for your own ghost-infested ballroom. The candles, which will be available in 5, 7 and 9-inch heights, feature a patented “Artificial Flame Technology” which makes them appear to flicker like a real flame, without the risk of burning down your house or dripping hot wax all over the place. Unfortunately they won’t be available until the Fall so there’s not a lot of detailed information like what batteries they take or even pricing at this time.

Nope, the weather is still pretty much the same here and shooting videos is still tough, however, 3 days ago while walking back home I stumble upon this beautiful sky and I couldn’t resist shooting something for you with my GH1 that I was luckily carrying with me that day.
If unfortunately I did not had with me a Tripod at that precise moment, I succeed however to shot something quite “stable” so just ignore the small “hick-up” that you may find time to time on this very short video and …

It seems pointless to go out and buy a proprietary home automation system when Apple already sells what is essentially an ideal touchscreen interface with the iPod Touch and the iPad. So that’s why iPort has created these in-wall mounts that lets you use either device, via various apps, to control your home’s AV gear, lighting, home automation and even wirelessly stream audio to wherever they’re installed.

A built-in dock connector provides access to either device’s line level audio output and also provides constant power so they never need to recharged while docked. And in case you were wondering, once installed your iPod or iPad isn’t trapped forever since the front faceplate of the mount is held on magnetically providing easy access. The CM-IW100T pictured above sells for around $250 while the larger iPad-compatible ‘2000T’ is $499.

Firefox Sync, Firefox Home app for iPhone announced

Are you an iPhone-using Firefox fan? Mozilla has some news that may make life a touch easier for you: the unveiling of Firefox Sync and a Firefox Home app for the iPhone.

Formerly known as Weave Sync, Firefox Sync is a browser add-on for the Firefox 4 desktop version. It makes your bookmarks, history, Awesome Bar data, passwords/form data and open tabs available to other Firefox-running computers and mobile gadgets.

The upcoming Firefox Home app for the iPhone uses FF Sync — for secure access to your bookmarks, open tabs and Awesome Bar content — and makes the info available to your iDevice. Firefox Home is not the same as a Firefox mobile web browser, but it does allow you to pick up an internet session started on your computer, and resume it where you left off on your mobile gadget — without starting from scratch.

Though there’s no word yet on when Firefox Home will be available, but Firefox Sync is downloadable now by clicking on this link.

Firefox Home, the browser that isn’t, is now awaiting App Store approval

Posted on 1st July 2010 by admin in gadgets

, , , , , ,

Firefox Home iPhone appBanking on the previous success of Opera getting its Mini browser into the App Store, Mozilla today submitted their almost-a-browser to the Secret Police in Cupertino for approval — and they seem quite confident that it’ll get through.

So, what is Firefox Home, anyway, and why is it not quite a browser?

Well, rather than just being a Safari replacement, Firefox Home acts as a bridge between your desktop version of Firefox and your iPhone. This is crucial, as apps that duplicate functionality of native iOS apps without adding anything new are a no-no in the App Store approval process.

Firefox Home uses the Firefox Sync extension to sync your (desktop) Firefox bookmarks and history with your iPhone, and — more interestingly — will allow you to slide tabs open in Firefox over to your iPhone, much like Google’s Chrome-to-Phone functionality in Android 2.2.

You can search for and view any of the pages in your desktop bookmarks or history, as well as view the tabs open on your desktop copy of Firefox, right on your iPhone. Once you’ve found the page you’re after, you can view it either in Safari (an Apple-friendly move), or from within Firefox Home (which may upset Apple). You can also send the links via email.

Mozilla confidently say on their blog that “once Firefox Home is accepted to the App Store, [they'll] post and let you know how to install it on your iPhone or iPod Touch.” So keep your eyes on their blog (or ours) for news on the approval process.

For a bit more info, a few more screenshots, and a cheesy demo video, check out Mozilla’s post here.
