T-Mobile Galaxy Tab hacked to make phone calls

FILED IN gadgets No Comments

For some crazy reason, Samsung removed the ability to make phone calls from all U.S. Galaxy Tab units. Sure, Europeans get to hold a big ol’ 7″ dinner plate to their face and talk to their friends all they want. U.S folks? No way, Yankee Doodle.

This is 2010, though, where no misdeed goes unhacked. And sure enough: the fine gents over at XDA have undone Samsung’s misdoings, enabling phone calls on the T-Mobile Galaxy Tab. It’s a bit of a tricky process, so don’t go diving in if you’re not comfortable with the idea of becoming the proud owner of a Samsung Galaxy Tab-replica paperweight.

Dual-core Samsung Galaxy 2 confirmed by Eldar Murtazin, Sony Ericsson Anzu not that great

FILED IN gadgets No Comments

Mobile phone blogging god Eldar Murtazin has a long history of getting his hands on devices well before anyone else, so when he tweets out some info, we tend to listen.

Today, he tweeted that he was playing with both the recently spotted Sony Ericsson Anzu, as well as a previously unknown dual-core Samsung Galaxy 2 GT-i9100.

You’ve probably heard the rumours about the Nexus S — the Samsung-built follow up to the Nexus One — and its delays.

Could the “hardware issue” causing the delay actually be the addition of a dual-core processor? Could the Galaxy S be to the Nexus S what the HTC Desire was to the Nexus One? That is, a skinned, branded version of Google’s “pure Android” device?

Or is the GT-i9100 unrelated to the Nexus S, and simply Samsung’s follow up to the Galaxy S, meaning the Nexus S won’t be dual-core? We just don’t know. All we know is that the version he was playing with was running Android 2.1, but will get 2.3 later.

On another note, Eldar also tweeted that the Sony Ericsson Anzu isn’t as “flagship” as people think, saying that it isn’t better than the Desire HD — which is available now — but won’t be available until March 2011, setting it back in terms of relative specifications. He also compares its laginess to the Xperia X10.

All in all, a tasty Twitter dump for a Sunday, don’t you think?

Make Calls Using Your T-Mobile Galaxy Tab

FILED IN gadgets 3 Comments

As many of you may already know, the U.S version of the Samsung Galaxy Tab was stripped of its calling abilities. The geniuses over at XDA weren’t going to have their European brothers have the ability to make  calls and not them, so they managed to hack the Galaxy Tab and enable the phone functionality. Currently, the hack only works for the T-Mobile USA Galaxy Tab and requires quite a bit of modifying. We’re pretty sure there will be an easier procedure in the near future, so keep your eyes peeled. For the dare-devils out there, hit the link below for the full instructions to get calling features working on your Galaxy Tab. Let us know in the comments if you successfully get the hack working.
