BlackBerry OS 6 has been pretty thoroughly leaked/previewed already, but I know a few of you out there are super-excited about the upcoming release and will enjoy any new info you can get.
The latest leak from the northern lands contains a whole bunch of developer slides, plus an accompanying (huuuuge) icon archive.
The slides cover such topics as the new UI improvements, new graphics handling, some of the new APIs available for “Super Apps”, and, finally, the new Platform Services that come with the new OS. You can check them out over at Mobile Syrup.
If you’re a keen developer — or just want to have a 1255 BB-themed icons ready for a custom Windows theme — you can grab the icon archive from here. I have no idea how long that link will last, though, so be quick!
Yesterday’s iPhone 4 pre-ordering launch wasn’t the end-all, be-all for everyone in our iOS 4 universe. So here’s a fun little nugget for iPad owners, particularly anyone who loves the old “clickety clacks” from classic Smith Coronas:
The USBTypewriter!
This one’s modeled after vintage ‘40s style typewriters, and even though it may seem like the character pedals are supposed to clang right onto that display, fear not — this is a USB-powered accessory that digitally interfaces with your tablet. When mounted and connected, the iPad moves with the carriage as you type, and it registers every character and carriage return. (The key-press noises are my favorite part.)
.
.
What’s more, it’s not a dedicated iPad gadget — it’s also compatible with any USB-equipped computer — and there are various models available.
Sure, it’s not practical, it’s slower than standard keyboards, and the price is no joke (from $300 to $500), but nostalgia freaks with deep pockets may not care. So if the onscreen keyboard, keyboard dock or BlueTooth keyboard don’t quite do it for you, this offers a really unique twist.
As of this writing, the particular model in the vid doesn’t show on the Etsy seller’s page, which may mean it’s sold out right now. But there are other styles available, as well as less-expensive conversion kits for refitting your own typewriter. Or you can send it in, and USBTypewriter creator Jack Zylkin will mod it for you. (Better than just letting it collect dust in your parents’ attic, no?)
If you’re the mega-geek type who likes doing everything from scratch, you’ll dig this extra: Thanks to its Creative Commons license, you can snag the design and do it from scratch all by yourself — for free! (Click the USBTypewriter link below, to learn more.)
There’s something about the synergy when old meets new that I just really dig. If you feel the same way, why not do a little time-trippin’ with me? If you know of any other great nostalgia tech for iOS devices, chime in below.
Even though this is an ad for the ADG Conference the underlying message is very neat. To be a freak maybe different but then again we are all different so does this make us all freaks in the end?
