Nokia’s Luna Charger Is Well Designed

FILED IN gadgets No Comments

By David Ponce

It might be an Apple world out there, but Nokia’s still a behemoth in the mobile world. And their accessories often come through with an aesthetic degree of design brilliance that we wish they could display in other areas. Take for instance this Bluetooth headset they’re releasing. It’s called the Luna and is really small, really light and comes in 5 different colors. It looks interesting but more importantly has some killer features. NFC (near field communications) makes pairing with your phone as simple as tapping the two together. If you get a call, press down on it to release it and answer the call. You’re done? Hang up by putting the Luna back on its dock. Or use the button if you don’t feel like doing it that way. Also, it’s able to pair with 2 phones, through Bluetooth 2.1 with EDR. With an impressive 8 hours of talk time and up to 60 hours of standby (unplugged, obviously), getting this $69 device seems like a no-brainer.

Do Not Water: Solar Bonsai Gadget Charger

FILED IN Entertainment No Comments

tree-charger-1.jpg

This is the Solar Bonsai Electree, a 27-solar paneled gadget charger in the shape of a tree. Too crazy for you? You better stop reading. The tree reaches a full charge in less than three hours and can store enough juice to charge 9 iPhones. Why anybody would have more than six iPhones is beyond me, but I have five and play Voltron with them sometimes. The tree is currently on presale for €299 (~$405), but at least 400 people have to order before they’re actually manufactured. Want to go green but not pony up the $400? Run an extension cord into your apartment from the plug in the hallway. “How is that green?” Haha, it doesn’t show up on my bill! Between siphoning volts from my neighbors and the hallway I’m only paying $8 a month in electricity — and that’s to run the the exhaust fan in the bathroom! Which is mandatory if you know what I mean. I mean I make gin in the bathtub and it gets fumey in there.

Quirky’s Ray Solar Charger Looks Like Great Idea

FILED IN gadgets No Comments

By David Ponce

The thing about windows is that they’re meant to let light through. It’s kind of their point. Solar chargers, then, would seem like a natural mate for them and Brandon Craven’s design brings the two together elegantly. Window and charger, living in harmony. Or maybe the window would consider the charger a parasite… who knows? In any case, all he’s done is add a suction cup to a regular solar charger… but sometimes that’s really all you need. A suction cup. Add it to everyday objects and see what happens.

In all fairness, Brandon’s product looks interesting. It charges via USB, has integrated batteries that will store energy even when not actively connected to a device, and a kickstand allows it to point at the sun even when no windows are around. The only issue is that the product is not yet real. It’s in its fundraising phase on social funding site Quirky. It costs $39 and there needs to be 2,000 sold before production kicks in. As of this writing, there are 708 commitments.

Air Voltage: Maxell Japan Announces Wireless Charger For iPad 2

FILED IN gadgets No Comments

air voltage

Hitachi Maxell, in cooperation with Murata, has announced [JP] the so-called Air Voltage for the Japanese market today, a combination of a wireless charging pad (dubbed “Energy Stand”) and jacket (“Energy Cover”) specifically for use with the iPad 2. According to Maxell, the device is the first of its kind (mass-produced).

The way it works is that users put their iPad 2 into the jacket, place it on the pad and let the Air Voltage system charge the tablet – no cables required. Maxell says that the wireless power transmission of 10W takes about 3 hours for a full charge, as long as charging the iPad the conventional way (AC adapter).

Owners can place the iPad 2 on the pad/stand either horizontally or vertically and keep using the tablet while it’s being charged, too.

Maxell plans to start selling the Air Voltage in Japan on November 25 for $196. Murata, the maker of the wireless power transmission module that’s built into the Air Voltage, has set up a detailed web page that explains the product in English (here‘s a video).
