Jailbreaking tip: Convert app icons for Retina Display

Let’s face it — it stinks to turn your phone on and see gunk on your homescreen. And while most app developers have seen to it that their app icons have been updated for the iPhone 4’s Retina Display, there are still a few that have lagged behind.

If it bugs you to see all the imperfections of an old icon next to a shiny new one, and you have a jailbroken device, then check out iRetiner. It updates all the icons for App Store apps, so they look much sleeker on the Retina Display. As a command-based jailbreak tweak, it requires MobileTerminal and Erica Utilities installed from Cydia.

1. Once everything has been installed, you can open the MobileTerminal application.

2. Type “SU” and press enter. Now type the default password “alpine” (or if you changed your password, type in your new one). Now you are logged in as the root user, which means you can make some real changes to your phone now. If you’re following these instructions, you’ll be okay. If you’re doing anything else, just make sure you know what you’re doing.

3. Now type in “iretiner” and press enter. You should get some options to choose from.

4. Type “1” and then type “y.” Now iRetiner will start working on updating those app icons.

5. Once it’s done, it will ask if you want to respring (this is sort of like a restart for your iPhone without actually turning it off). Type “y” and your phone will reset, and you will then find that all your app icons have been updated and look very very pretty now.

Anytime you install a new application that does not support the iPhone 4’s Retina Display, you can start up MobileTerminal and do the same thing again.

I just tried this out, and needless to say, it is nothing short of amazing. If you give it a shot, let us know what you think in the comments.
