Breakable: iPhone 4 Suffers The Most Damage From Accidents

According to a report by SquareTrade (a company that sells extended warranties), the iPhone 4 is the phone least likely to fail in the first year but is the most likely to break due to accidental damage.

The year long study looked at 50,000 warranty replacements. The iPhone 4 had the fewest malfunctions not due to accidental damage while Motorola and HTC Android phones tied for second. Blackberry phones failed 6.3% of the time in their first year of use, putting them near the bottom of the list.

More stats:

• The iPhone 3GS is least likely to fail, with BlackBerry not far behind

• Motorola, HTC, and the iPhone 4 failed slightly more often, but none are projected to exceed an overall failure rate of 16%

• The aggregated group of other smart phones had the highest incidence of failure–17% in the first year-making them 44% more likely to fail than the iPhone 3GS

As for breakage, the iPhone 4 is king of the heap with 9.4% shattering in the first year while the Blackberry devices had an accidental damage rate of 6.7%, the lowest. Clearly if they stuck an iPhone inside a Blackberry you’d have the ultimate gorilla phone. Who’s with me?

Sorry to say it, but I’m laughing in the face of everyone who bought one of these defective by design phones. It was obvious, patently obvious, on launch day that this phone was garbage. For f’s sake, on launch day many reviewers phones shattered. But the iFailful just lapped up everything thing steve said even though it went right in the face of the obvious, and now they get to enjoy the fruits of that decision.

Just look at the rate 4 month after purchase. The iPhone 3GS had 2,8 % accidental breakings. The iPhone 4 4.7 %. That´s just to much …

Not sure about the stats, possible reason 1: iPhone 4 is prone to breakage due to the glass surface; possible reason 2, iPhone 4 users tend to use it more frequently for all kinds of things, thus the likihood of dropping it…

Its not a study… no testing… this is a warranty company saying we had X claims for Y contracts on phone Z. Its not statistics, its actual numbers for their environment. Who knows if their contracts are a good approximation of all phone owners?

But you’re right that small difference means that you cant conclude that any phone is actually better than another.

Seems my suspicions were confirmed I pretty much decided not to buy an iPhone 4 when i found out they were glass on both sides. I had dropped my previous 2g, 3g, 3gs many times and my 3gs cracked once.. but i could just see the 4′s design wasn’t gonna cut the mustard with my butter fingers ;) And i’ve since bought a Nexus One and a HTC Mozart anyways, so it caused me to fall off the Apple cart ;)

A difference of 2.7% between the best and worst phones for breakage seems pretty insignificant. Where is the link to the study with some hard numbers? How many of each type of phone were tested? This article isn’t really saying much of anything at all other than having a sensational title.

I had the iPhone 2G for three years and it never broke. Finally decided to upgrade to iPhone4 and my screen cracked in the first month. BOO.
