Glowing App Icon lights up your springboard icons

Ever wanted to add a little character to the application icons on your iPhone or iPod touch but have always been a little weary of the jailbreak scene? Well now you are in for a nice little treat. Now there is an application that can give those app icons a nice glow effect on you springboard.

Glowing App Icons is a free application on the App Store which will set your applications aglow. How does it do it without jailbreaking the device? Pretty simple actually, and at the risk of ruining the magic for you I’ll explain. This application gives you the ability to change the color of the glowing borders by sliding through a color bar. Then once you find the right color you have been looking for you can save it as a wallpaper with one of the many background pictures that comes with the application or with any of your favorite picture you have taken yourself with your devices camera.

One of the drawbacks that I have noticed is that it does require your device to be on iOS 4.1 to work. I tried downloading it for my iPhone 4 and was quickly met with an alert that I would need to update to 4.1 to be able to download the application. And seeing as I am still currently using 4.0.1 for unlock reasons that just wasn’t an option. And if you are still using that ancient iPhone 2G then this application is also out of the picture unfortunately.

Another drawback is not one that most will find annoying but in my case kinda makes it a dealbreaker. I recently installed the jailbreak application iconoclasm which allows you to change the layout of the applications on the springboard. So I would find it hard to make these two pictures together look good at all.

But like I said that’s not a big deal if you have yet to jailbreak your iPhone and install that particular jailbreak application. Plus not forgetting the fact that if you are on iOS 4.1 you most likely aren’t rocking a jailbroken device anyways.

So does this nifty application give you a reason to update to 4.1, I know it nearly had me connecting to iTunes just to update and get my hands on it. While you mull it over enjoy this nice demonstration of the application doing its thing.
