Live Action Vampire Bat Hunt

Hooray! October 1st is finally here which means I can open the floodgates on crappy Halloween-themed gadgets for the 2nd best holiday of the year! Even though these days I don’t hand out candy, decorate, dress up or even go to costume parties, fond memories from my childhood coupled with giant boxes of miniature chocolate bars available at every store easily make this the best time of the year- second only to Christmas.

So let’s get things started with an old favorite that’s gotten a spooky Halloween makeover. This Vampire Bat Hunt game is really no different than the interactive Duck Hunter we first brought you a couple of years ago at CES. Except that while some people might find ducks cute and think twice about shooting one down, no one’s going to hesitate when it comes to blasting this vampire bat out of the sky since they’ve gone to great lengths to make it as evil looking as possible. I mean it almost looks like a flying Gremlin! The gameplay and mechanics are pretty much the same as Duck Hunter too, requiring 3 direct hits from the infrared gun (which also doubles as the charger) to knock it out of the sky, and then presumably you’ll just need to stab a wooden stake through its heart to finish it off. ~$30 from Hammacher Schlemmer.

Sprint Samsung Epic 4G update “on hold”

FILED IN gadgets No Comments

If you own a Samsung Epic 4G, then you were probably aware that there was meant to be an update released today that solved the terrible 3G upload speeds that you were experiencing. Well, you may have noticed that the update didn’t actually come… but why?

Sprint have posted an explanation in their community forums, and blame it on administration issues on Google’s end:

We learned this evening that there were administrative issues getting this software loaded to Google’s servers. We don’t yet have an expected time when this will be available but will update you as soon as possible. Please see the statement below that was sent by the Sprint Product Management team:

We were planning to release an update for your Samsung Epic 4G on 9/30. The file was delivered and on track for distribution but late this afternoon, we learned that an administrative issue prevented Google from releasing the update as we had planned. We are working to resolve the issue and will provide an update as soon as we understand the new delivery schedule.

We would like to clarify that the timing of this update has nothing to do with the 30 day return window that many of you on these blogs have been discussing and that this delay has nothing to do with any last minute changes within the release package itself. The delay is simply due to an administrative issue that we are working to resolve.

As they said above, there is no expected time-frame for the release, but I’ll let you know if I hear anything.

If this is the first you’ve heard of any update, I’ve pasted the changelog, below.

9/30 – Samsung Epic Maintenance Release

Fixes:
WiFi standby battery drain
Amazon MP3 cannot download in 4G
Large emails lag in upload speeds
Increased 3G upload speeds

Update your software
1. The software will be automatically downloaded to your phone since this is a recommended update.
2. A System update screen will prompt the user to ‘Install now’ or ‘Install later’.
If ‘Install later’ is selected, a reminder will be sent once or twice a day to install the update.
If ‘Install now’ is selected, the phone will power down and then reboot.

Important Notes:
- This update will take approximately 7-8 minutes to download and 7-8 minutes to install.
- The new software version is: S:D700.0.5S.DI18
- This update is available OTA (over the air) and will be pushed to your device. It is being pushed in stages, beginning on 9/30 12:00AM EST, and will be rolled out to users over several days.
- Your device must be on software version DI07 to perform the update to DI18. If you are still on DG17 or DG27, a Sprint Service and Repair Center should be able to update your device to DI07. The update from DI07 to DI18 is not yet available to the Service and Repair Centers. As soon as it is, this post will be updated.

Android Market now paying developers in 20 more countries, open for business in a further 18

FILED IN gadgets No Comments

Good news for you non-us Android developers today, as Google now supports paid apps in 20 more countries, bringing the total up to 29 countries where developers can accept payments in the Android Market.

According to the Android Developers Blog, developers in Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Hong Kong, Ireland, Israel, Mexico, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Russia, Singapore, South Korea, Sweden, Switzerland and Taiwan can now sell apps on the Android Market.

Also, over the next two weeks, the Android Market will open itself up to a further 18 countries, bringing the total number of countries able to access and purchase Android apps through the Market to 32.

The countries with fresh access to the Android Market include Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Hong Kong, India, Ireland, Israel, Mexico, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Singapore, Sweden, and Taiwan.

If you’re an Android user, you have probably seen some apps that are free in the Android Market, but can be “unlocked” or “upgraded” after making a payment through PayPal. This is usually because the developer lives in a country where Google doesn’t support payments to developers.

Hopefully, today’s upgrade means that a fair chunk of these developers can now offer paid apps directly through the Market, offering a more streamlined (and trustworthy) payment method for app purchasers in any of the 32 supported countries.

This move should also go some way toward getting more app developers in more countries on-board with Android, helping it compete with Apple’s gigantic App Store.
