Jobs on iOS 4/iPhone 3G bugs: “Software update coming soon”

Not everyone has moved into an iPhone 4; in fact, there are still a lot of people using the 3G model. If this describes you, then you’re probably intimately aware of those widely reported  iOS issues on this handset, like unresponsive system performance while scrolling, zooming and typing — you know, basically everything involved in using your phone.

If you’ve been putting up with that since you updated, take heart: According to Steve Jobs, a fix is (finally) on the way. He said as much when he replied to an email from a concerned 3G owner, who wrote:

I’ve waited patiently through 4.0.1 and 4.0.2, looking for a fix that will make my phone work again. I’ve read the forums that advise me to jailbreak my phone or use some other method so I can downgrade back to a version of iPhone 3, however I’m not prepared to use a method that is not supported by Apple.

In response, Jobs shot back the following:

Software update coming soon.

Sent from my iPhone

Unfortunately, that little sentence doesn’t reveal when the fix will come and what changes it might include. And is he talking about a marginal update (like 4.0.3), or is Jobs alluding to the next big step up — iOS 4.1, which developers have been testing? The devs have been reporting improvements with the iPhone 3G’s sluggishness with this version.

What I find interesting is that this user brought up jailbreaking in his email to the CEO. Man, I really wish Jobs would have addressed that.

When MacRumors covered this item, it also posted a parody of an Apple commercial highlighting the problems with iOS on a 3G. It’s funny, and somehow really not, at the same time. If this has been your experience, I salute you for hanging in there. Stay strong friends — hopefully there’ll be some resolution soon!

Turning off the spotlight search does help some but I really hope this new update fixes everything.
