Jailbreak Tues — Your questions answered

From time to time I receive emails from readers who have questions with jailbreaking and unlocking their iPhones. I do my best to answer each and every one of those questions, but today I wanted to use this column to reach out to one reader, Terri.

Terri emailed me with several issues that I feel all of us can learn from. So, I start with the email.

So let’s start with the overall concern that Terri is having with issues with jailbreakme.com. From what I have read and experienced, some users have been having issues with crashing from using the site. As I understand it, most if not all these problems have been resolved by the iPhone Dev team. Terri, if you decide to attempt this jailbreak again, I am to believe that you shouldn’t have these same issues. Now with that said, I am not suggesting you to do so, I am just saying that these developers have been working hard to fix previous issues.

Up next would be the concern of the white pixelated line that appears at the top of your screen in the Apple boot screen. I can say without a doubt this is normal. I was a bit worried myself when I first saw this pop up on my iPhone when I jailbroke mine. But I haven’t seen any problems from this.

Finally, I will say that if you are looking to unlock your iPhone with iOS 4.0.1, you will need to use ultrasn0w which is found in Cydia. One other piece of advice that I would suggest when attempting the jailbreaking process, flip your iPhone’s wifi on. This will allow for a faster connection to load the software necessary to perform this. I had a similar issue when I was jailbreaking that it would freeze and wouldn’t complete the full jailbreak. I had to restore my iPhone and attempted again using my wifi connection and I personally didn’t experience this same issue again.

Terri, if you are wanting to unlock your iPhone after you have gone through the jailbreaking process, be sure to check out this guide as it will lead you to the unlocking process and give you a couple of apps to check out in Cydia after you have completed this journey.

As always, I wish you luck and I look forward to more of everyones emails as they arrive in my in-box!
