Consumer Reports still not fans of iPhone 4

The review by Consumer Reports, which gave the iPhone 4 the highest rank of all smartphones on the market while also not recommending it, might have been what ultimately prompted Apple to hold its press event last week. So what was the product-evaluating powerhouse’s response to it? Meh.

Despite the press conference, CR still doesn’t give the device its golden seal of approval. While it applauded Apple for addressing the issue and taking a step in the direction to solve it, the organization dismissed it, saying the free cases was only a limited and temporary repair:

“Consumer Reports believes Apple’s offer of free cases is a good first step. However, Apple has indicated that this is not a long-term solution, it has guaranteed the offer only through September 30th, and has not extended it unequivocally to customers who bought cases from third-party vendors. We look forward to a long-term fix from Apple. As things currently stand, the iPhone 4 is still not one of our Recommended models.”

.

The list of companies that are responding less than happily to Apple’s proposed solution (notably containing RIM and Nokia) grows with the addition of Consumer Reports, and if Apple doesn’t come out with a permanent fix soon, it looks like it may grow even more.

When I bought my iPhone 3g two years ago, I bought a case and Zagg’s invisible shield to protect it from damage. Both did the trick. When I purchased the iPhone 4, I bought a shield and a screen protector. Since the case addresses the antenna issue as a consequence, the antenna problem is a non-issue. The antenna issue is remedied by taking otherwise prudent steps to protect the phone. This problem is a boon for the case makers. If the remedy wasn’t so simple or required more extraordinary steps to repair, the impact on iPhone sales would be crippling. Since it’s not, no regrets here. If it looks like it might rain, take an umbrella.
