Rumor: iPod Touch to get 5MP cam, HD vid recording AND FaceTime
Stories about the iPod Touch possibly getting a camera aren’t new, but the latest gossip has the little sibling of the iPhone sporting a 5MP camera, HD video recording, and FaceTime Wifi video chatting.
Here’s the scoop: According to ElectricPig, suppliers are indicating to UK-based retail outlet John Lewis that these features may be forthcoming. The company had a “Xmas in July” event in London, where it offered these tidbits in a slideshow presentation. It also covered a camera flash, direct YouTube uploads of HD vids (over Wifi), an accelerometer and a gyroscope, just like the iPhone 4.
As for the idea that a front-facing camera will also be included — this wasn’t specifically brought up at the presentation, but FaceTime was. And wouldn’t you be hard-pressed to use that without a front cam?
If these musings turn out to be true, then that’s a pretty colossal leap from previous iterations, which didn’t even have a measly low-pixel camera at all. (Reportedly, plans for an iPod Touch camera were yanked last year due to component problems.) If this year’s model offers these very iPhone 4–like features, then that would close much of the gap between the Touch and the latest Apple smartphone. The only things that weren’t mentioned were a hi-res Retina Display and A4 processor.
Right now, the whole iPod line has been undergoing scrutiny, as its percentage of overall Apple revenue has been decreasing. This isn’t to say that iPod Touch owners are a rarity — recent back-to-school promotions that offer freebie devices are ensuring that there’s a healthy supply of users. But in terms of sales figures, the product line that once single-handedly saved Cupertino is becoming more of a side note.
Given all that, would it be too far-fetched to think Apple would bolster this product area?
iPod Touch announcements usually come in September, so it won’t be too long now until we know for sure. So, if it has all this goodness on board, are you planning to grab one? Would you even return your iPhone 4, and use this alongside — gasp! — a different platform? Tell us what you’re thinking.
