AT&T’s Samsung Captivate (Galaxy S) launching on July 18th for $199

Remember the Captivate? It’s AT&T’s slightly modified version of Samsung’s Android-powered superphone, the Galaxy S. We already knew about the 4.0″ Super AMOLED display, the 1Ghz processor, and all the other specs. We even went hands on! What we didn’t have: a launch date or a price.

Well, now we do.

AT&T just sent over a carrier pigeon, with a single note attached to its foot. On this note, scribed in the finest gold: “SAMSUNG CAPTIVATE. July 18th. $199 on a 2-year contract (no rebate required)”. Any bets on whether or not AT&T’s going to unnecessarily lock this one down, like they seem to be doing with all? of their Android phones?

ATT is guaranteed to lock this one down…they state it in the FAQs for Android

    Q. Why can’t apps be installed from sources outside of the Android Market?
    A. Android Market, managed by Google, is open to all developers. There is no approval process for applications, they are all accepted by default and Google has stated that they place apps in the Android Market within 24 hours of their submission. AT&T selected Android Market as the exclusive source for applications because it forces developers to be accountable for the apps they submit. If the Android community has issues with an app, the app can be flagged and removed. This minimizes the risk of malicious apps harming customers and provides more protection to the customer’s private data stored on the phone.

I’ve had the Galaxy S now for a couple of weeks and the only thing this device is really missing is Froyo.

As soon Samsung push that little puppy to the world, I’ll personally be a happy mobile using bunny.

Granted a bunny which is being chased by a super fast Puppy, but happy none the less.
