Rumor: Cloud-based iTunes on the way!

Add this to the cloud-based iTunes rumor pile: According to a tipster at BoyGenius Report, upcoming iTunes plans will finally include the oft-reported, much-desired new feature. There are three ways this will be implemented, says the source.

iTunes will be able to:

  • Stream music and videos from Apple servers to your computers and devices.
  • Stream music and videos from your computers to your other computers and devices.
  • Wirelessly sync with devices.

There’s a lot of “good” here, along with some concerns. If true, these features could free up a lot of onboard storage on mobiles. If you walk around with a ton of media on hand, that liberated space might even offer a performance boost for your device. And if you’re like me, unable to fit all your media in your phone or iPad, you’ll be able to access your whole catalog of stuff anywhere you are.

But there are also bandwidth considerations. With all these nifty new programs we could all be enjoying, like Netflix for the iPhone, Hulu Plus and now possibly cloud-based iTunes, some users will likely be pushed past the data limits of their tiered data plans.

But there’s an even more obvious concern: Some of us are having serious signal issues. Putting iTunes in the cloud and accessing it via a handset with on-again, off-again reception could be asking for even more frustration.

One aspect of this that seems to have very little bad to it, at least as far as I can tell, is wireless iTunes syncing. The idea of not having to hook up my iDevice often sounds pretty dreamy to me.

What about you? What feature of cloud-based iTunes would you look forward to most? Weigh in below.
