Google Music To Take On iTunes

Google have let it slip that they are about to take on the Apple’s iTunes store with the launch of their very own music store for their Android mobile operating system.  Named Goolge Music, it will see users being able to download media directly from their phones, similar to the Wi-Fi iTunes launched in 2007.

News was uncovered by TechCrunch, who have found a new logo on the company’s website, which suggested that users will be able to purchase music and buy apps directly from their phones as well as through a desktop application.

Google gave those in the know a brief preview at its I/O event, after announcing that they have acquired Simply Media, which will be used for the desktop app, allowing users to stream local music to their Android devices.

So this will mean Google Music will most likely be a two-tiered operation. On one end  you will be able to search for songs, purchase them, and send them from the cloud directly to your android device. The other sees a desktop client that syncs your music to the cloud for streaming on your phone wherever you go.

So Google are looking to take on iTunes, but is it too late? With iTunes so well established, would this new music marketplace tempt you away from Apple and their ever expanding empire?  Have your say below…

With the WWDC in full swing at the moment, normally the UK wouldn’t be getting the iPhone at the same time as the US.

Well it would appear that us UK people maybe in for a treat as Carphone Warehouse are quick on the mark by offering their customers the opportunity to pre-register for the recently announced iPhone 4.

What is even more interesting is that the store expects the iPhone 4 to arrive in the UK “from late June 2010”, and is allowing customers to be first in line to get their hands on the handset when it is available.

So could this mean that we could be getting the iPhone 4 the last week in June? Well, if Apple follow the same pattern as the last Friday of the month then this could mean that we could expect the release date of the iPhone 4 for 24th June?

When do you think the iPhone 4 will be released?  Would you buy the iPhone 4 when it is released?  Leave us a comment and let us know what you think…

The WWDC conference is finally here Gaj-it folks, and we have our keyboards at the ready to give you the latest from the conference. News of the iPhone 4G has finally hit the tech world, so after a couple of wild leaks and speculations we can put the rumours at bay as Steve Jobs reveals all at the WWDC about the iPhone 4.

First things first, what does the iPhone look like? Well, it is fairly similar to what we have seen earlier in the missing prototypes. Steve Jobs describes it as as an old Leica camera, with a glass front and back panel.

However, we’re more interested to see what is inside so without further ado here goes…

    Under The Bonnet

Under it’s bonnet it has an Apple A4 chip inside, just like the iPad. Inside the A4 there are a few interconnected chips which consumes less power because subcomponents can be switched on and off when they are not needed.

    Screen Display

We were right about the display. The screen resolution is expected to be 960 x 640, in which Apple call the Retina display and you’ve guessed it, it is four times as many pixels as the iPhone 3GS display.

    Camera

The main iPhone camera has a larger sensor and a bigger lens which we means that we will be able to capture higher resolution videos and photographs.

    Video Conferencing

One thing which we have all been raving about is the front facing camera, which has also been included in the iPhone 4’s colourful array of specs. This video conference camera comes as standard with VGA resolution.

    Battery Life

We predicted that the battery life is 17% bigger than the current one and we weren’t far off as Apple have revealed that the battery will be 16% larger so we should expect a longer battery life.

So what have Apple missed out? Well, there is still no news regarding the all white iPhone, touch sensitive casing and iPhone tethering so if we hear more of this then we will keep you posted?

Disappointed or impressed by the iPhone 4’s specs so far? Leave us a comment and let us know what you think…

With just less than hour left before the WWDC kicks off, it is hoped that Apple will reveal all about their iPhone 4G or iPhone HD too.

It has certainly been an eventful couple of months for us in the tech world. With leaked photos, footage and even missing or ’stolen’ prototype models, everyone has been keeping their finger on the pulse at any flicker of news regarding the next generation iPhone.

I am sure Apple fan or not you have been keeping yourselves updated about it here on the Gaj-it blog however for those of you that need a recap, let’s give you a round up of what we could expect to see from the hugely anticipate iPhone 4G:

    Larger Battery

One of the annoyances with the current iPhone is how rapidly the battery drains on the phone. However, this maybe the thing of the past if recent speculation on the iPhone 4G is anything to suffice. It is expected Apple’s next generation iPhone battery will be 17% larger than the current one. Reports have suggested that Apple have achieved this by shrinking down certain parts of the phone to make room for the battery. Consequently some believe that the larger battery could be infact for the new processor which is requires more juice to run rather than a longer iPhone battery life.

    HD Quality Screen

Recently rumours have suggested that the iPhone 4G could include a 960 x 640 higher resolution screen. If the rumours are true then this will give us four times the amount of pixels found on the current iPhone. It was reported a few weeks back that Apple will be using a similar display found on the iPad which offers much clearer images and comparably better resolution than other competing phones such as the Google Nexus One.

    Better Camera

Currently on the iPhone, the camera quality is fairly abysmal compared to other competing smartphones on the market. With the likes of the Google Nexus One touting a 5 megapixel camera it wouldn’t be surprising if the next generation iPhone decided to follow suit to compete with other phones on the market. I certainly think that this would be a welcome feature, however whether it is the ultimate decider for customers if they choose the next iPhone 4G over another handsets still remains to be seen.

    Front Facing Camera

One of the interesting features, which has been discussed and has also been spotted on the ‘missing’ prototypes is a hole in the front of the iPhone 4G which could be for a front facing camera. Now for all you vain people who love taking pictures of yourself this could definitely be a winner, but more importantly it has been suggested the front facing camera will be used for video calling.

There has been some debate to how useful this feature will be. Some believe it is more for the business market and some believe it is a novelty, however with the world becoming more and more global I think there will be more of an appeal for people to use video calling to keep in touch with friends and family.

    White/Coloured Options Available

About a month ago a supposed iPhone 4G panel was leaked which showed it all in white. We have already seen the back of an iPhone in white, however this has never been the case for the front and the back. If rumours are true then we could be seeing an all white version heading our way very soon too. I am also inclined to predict that if Apple are creating an all white version then could this mean that there maybe other coloured options on the horizon? What about a tantalising green or a vibrant fuchsia to tickle everyone’s tastebuds? This would certainly be a nice selling point for the iPhone 4G, especially as people is seen also as a fashion accessory.

    Touch Sensitive Case

There has been no news since this was last reported in back in January and even the leaked prototype models didn’t get a whiff of it but maybe this is something Apple are keeping under wraps until today. The touch sensitive concept case has been rumoured to maybe allow for you to quickly access commonly used buttons such as your internet, calendar, email and contacts by touching the backing of case. It might be wishful thinking, however I wouldn’t rule it out completely as this might be something which Apple have been keeping under wraps and expecting to unveil at the WWDC.

    iPhone Tethering

Last month Apple released it beta version of the iPhone 4.0 OS. With the new OS expected to be released during the summer time, it has certainly provided us with some hints on what we could expect of Apple’s next generation iPhone. Apart from making changes to the default homescreen it has been suggested that especially for AT&T customers, the iPhone 4G maybe available with a tethering option which could enable customers to have WiFi and 3G switched on at the same time, however the feasibility of this remains to be seen especially as some have suggested that it could in fact drain the battery life of the iPhone.

With the WWDC set to kick off shortly with a release date proposed shortly after, are there any other features that you would like the iPhone 4G or iPhone HD to include? Leave us a comment and let us know what you think…

Hot on the heels of their iPhone Playstation emulator, ZodTTD have just announced that they will also be bringing their PlayStation emulator to Android devices soon.

News surfaced via ZodTTD’s Twitter in which they suggested that the Android version of the emulator runs even faster than the iPhone 3G – even before Froyo’s has been factored into it.

ZodTT intends to get to work on a Nintendo 64 emulator, and then a Android version of the ever impressive VLC media software as soon as they have completed work on the Android Playstation emulator.

According to Digital Disbeliever the emulator is currently a bit sluggish and doesn’t quite hit the 60FPS sweet spot. Although a speed boost is expected, you will still need to be running a version of Android 2.x and more than likely one of the top of the line Android Devices specs wise.

So does the thought of playing classic PS1 games like Metal Gear Solid or Final Fantasy 7 from your mis-spent youth excite you? Have your say below…

    Overview:

Samsung look set to ride the wave of high-end handset success with its latest release. The Samsung Wave features eyebrow-raising specs including AMOLED screen, 1GHz processor, HD video recording as well as Samsung’s brand new Bada OS. So is this phone an iPhone contender? Let’s take a look.

    Review:

The Samsung Wave is the first handset to sport the new Bada operating system, overlaid with the brand new Touch Wiz 3.0 user interface.

“Bada” means ocean in Korean, and wave means… well you get where Samsung is sailing off to in the land of metaphors.

The whole point of Bada is that it’s application-orientated, complete with its own app store. Apps can then appear among other widgets on the Wave’s homescreens.

The Wave boasts up to 10 homescreens, so there’s plenty of space for all of your widgets.

To include a new app to your line-up, you just need to simply touch the widget button at the top of the screen, then drag your widget of choice from the list to your homescreen.

Samsung will even help spring clean your phone, by including a function to organise your widgets in order of most used, and this will continue to update as you get bored of old apps and move onto new ones.

Seeing as this handset will house a lot of your life, you may find the need to hunt around for an old email or text message before long. Samsung has thought of this as well, and by simply double-tapping the screen, you get a search menu that will let you scour through your phone, mobile content or the internet.

Looking at the phone itself, the big screen harks to the iPhone and HTC Desire, but the Wave is noticeably thin, measuring in at just 10.9mm thick versus the Desire’s 11.9mm and the iPhone 3GS looking like a bit of a heffer at 12.3mm.

Packed into this sleek chassis is quite a bit of power with a 1GHz processor, that is Samsung’s own Hummingbird brand. The phone is quite zippy, especially when going online so it looks like Samsung has cracked it with the Wave.

The display on the Wave is a touch on the small side with a 3.3 inch screen (the iPhone stretches out to 3.5 inches), but the AMOLED technology on the Samsung Wave really brings out colours vividly.

Samsung has said that it has stretched out to “Super AMOLED” technology, which is designed to improve visibility when in direct sunlight. We tested it outdoors and would say there was a bit of glare reduction in the sun, but we still needed to find a right angle to see everything clearly on the screen.

Similarly to the iPhone 3GS, the screen on the Wave is covered in an oleophobic coating, so you can eat a Big Mac and check your emails without smudging up your pristine screen.

The Samsung Wave comes with a 5 megapixel camera, and as we already mentioned, records in 720p HD.

Shutter lag when taking pictures is minimal, and the camera menus are easy to navigate, with a range of scene and shooting modes to choose from.

The phone supports Xvid, DivX and H.264 video playback.

Listening to your tunes on the Wave is a bit of an event, with CD cover displays when you search and playback songs.

Music can be sorted by Album, Artist, Playlist or can display all tracks, which is to be expected. What is a nice feature though, is the one-touch button to add a song to a playlist as you’re listening to it.

So is the Samsung Wave an iPhone rival? Well the specs are there, but what about the x-factor? With prices starting from £20 at MobileShop.com, it’s cheaper than an Apple device which we’re pretty sure will add a certain appeal to the Wave.

    We Say:
We quite like the new Bada OS and love the Touch Wiz 3.0 UI, and think it’s high time Samsung got serious about apps. The Wave is a great handset to look at and performs well under the bonnet as well. This is by far Samsung’s best handset to rival Apple and Android.

Last month, Google Goggles, the image recognition search feature was launched on Android.A month later and it has been confirmed by a Google project manager that Google is planning to bring its virtual search tool to the iPhone too.

Google Goggles allows to you take photos of items and let the search engine process it for possible search results. Goggles v1.1 comes with better barcode, artwork and logo recognition, and will also perform searches based on images in your phone’s photo gallery.

Currently, Google Goggles struggles to identify items within a photograph, and in testing out the app, we’ve rarely had a correct search performed from a photo so we will see if Google has ironed out this issue when rolling it out on the iPhone.

Are you an Android user who has tried out Google Goggles on their Android phone? What do you think of it? Do you think it is useful or is it just another app which loses its novelty after a while? Leave us a comment and let us know what you think…

A photo of the Samsung Galaxy Tablet was spotted last week on Samsung South Africa’s twitter account. Since then, according to a Korean newspaper, the Galaxy tablet is only one of three touchscreen tablet devices planned this year.

With the 7 inch model proposed for August, the two other devices, which include a 8 inch and 10 inch variety are proposed for November and December.  This certainly provides a unique selling point over the Apple iPad for people who are looking for varying sized tablets with different price points.

No pricing or an official release date has been suggested yet, however we can expect that the iPad rival tablet will run on Android 2.2 Froyo.

Do you think this tablet can rival the iPad or will it just be another tablet which is not worthy to be an iPad contender? Leave us a comment and let us know what you think…

On Friday, the world will cease to function. Planes will fall out of the sky, phones will ring unanswered, and tumbleweeds will roll past playgrounds. Nuclear holocaust? No -

    The World Cup.

You’ve still got a week, so get yourself well prepared with the gadgets below.

    England Supporters Pack

Chances are, you already have the two flags on your car, marking you out as a true patriot (for a month anyway). But do you have the necessary big flag to string up on the front of your house or behind the TV? How about the face paint to draw little flags on your cheeks? Well get organised and get them all at once, without needing to trek around Poundland with all the other numpties.

    8

    Beer Keg Chiller and Dispenser

An important part of world cup preparation is getting the booze in. But who wants to go to the trouble of filling a bucket with ice cubes to keep the beer cold when you could have a 5 litre keg that does it for you? Fill her up, whack a glass under the nozzle and pretend you own a (very small) bar. Never have to get up to go to the kitchen again!

    Beer Bottle Goblets

But with a fancy beer dispenser at your disposal, you don’t want to be drinking out of any old glass do you? Look posh without really trying with these handmade, recycled beer bottle goblets. Choose from Sol, Grolsch or Corona. Your missus can even drink wine from one and still not look out of place.

Ok, so you have your instant patriotism, and your chilled beverages. Now to set the atmosphere. Pretend you’re really out on the pitch with the players by lighting the room with a Floodlamp Desk Lamp. Approximately 50cm tall, with a posable head and six 25W bulbs - you could even get four and put one in each corner of the room!

But what do you watch the action on? A 35″ flat screen HD TV? Don’t be daft. Hook up your Freeview box to this baby and watch the boys in style projected across up to 75″ of your living room wall. And it plays DVDs too, so hide your girlfriend’s copy of ‘Sex and the City’ before the really important games ok?
