The Orbitarium

Yesterday the Swiss Science Center Technorama opened a new stunning exhibit, probably the largest of its kind in Europe. An animated image of the earth is displayed on the inner wall of a huge glass sphere. Visitors can walk around this 3D presentation of the Earth. Switching the usual perspective we know from a planetarium the Technorama calls this an “Orbitarium”.
Hyper- or Omniglobes have been around for a few years but this one is special as the globe is not placed on a platform but mounted on the ceiling so the earth really seems to float in space. Also the resolution of the image that is displayed on the 7 squaremeter surface of the square is the highest currently available. And as the exhibit is located in its own dark room visitors really feel like astronauts marveling at the beauty of our blue planet.
The video has some first impressions.
